Programs for Students with Visual Impairments
A Supplemental Services Teacher (SST) for the Visually Impaired provides consultative assistance to the regular education teacher in order to maintain a student with a visual impairment in the regular education classroom. The SST helps in the development of the IEP, assists the regular classroom teacher in developing teaching strategies, selects and develops instructional materials and equipment required for the student, assists in the modification of the classroom environment for the child, when appropriate, demonstrates instructional techniques and materials, and provides Braille instruction. Services may be direct or consultative.
The SST may also provide Orientation and Mobility training for students. Orientation and Mobility training provides students with skills needed to navigate their surroundings efficiently, effectively, and safely.
